The Aging Process Mirrored In My Face
When I saw the pictures, I was faced with the brutal reality, yes I felt like 30 but the pictures told another story. I didn’t recognize that woman with gray hair and a wrinkled face with eyes half closed. The experience was so shocking that I was speechless. Mandi did her best to console me, telling me that the pictures didn’t look like me at all. She suggested we take more. We did, but the result was the same. It was useless I was bitten by the harsh truth. I had to go home, I needed to cry. I walked all the way home from West 4th to Grand Street, crying every step of the way. I was inconsolable. My daughters, family and friends all assuring me I was not old and in fact very youthful.
All night I could not sleep. I started thinking of my friend who earlier that week had a face lift, her hair colored, bags under her eyes removed. All I could think was how much younger she looked than me. She wasn’t home crying, she was out having fun and feeling good about herself.
I realized that I had made an error, I thought I was still 30 years old, and I imagined that my appearance would reflect that.
It brought to mind the words of John Cage:
“An error is simply a failure to adjust immediately, from a preconception to an actuality.”
I started thinking how do I correct this error!!! should I color my hair? I have worn my hair grey since my 40's. Should I have my wrinkles smoothed over? Should I start exercising? On and On and On. By the morning, though, I adjusted to my circumstances, and was able to accept the apparent evidence of my aging, I was going to be proud of it and parade it, just like I had with my hair. I didn’t color it, I just let it get whiter and whiter. When my ex left me, my big change was to become a blonde. http://act1-scene2.blogspot.com/ but, after that momentary lapse,
I realized that it just wasn't me, and promptly shaved it all off and let my gray hair grow back. I love my gray hair, my gray hair is part of who I am.
After all aging is a natural process it just keeps going, I will not fight it I’m going to join it and nurture it every step of the way, every step will accompany me to the next and the next and the next. The only thing I can control is how I feel inside and what makes me comfortable. Inside I’m 30 full of energy and ideas and that’s what’s important.
I started thinking how do I correct this error!!! should I color my hair? I have worn my hair grey since my 40's. Should I have my wrinkles
Ho cominciato a pensare come fare per correggere questo errore!!! dovrei colorare i miei capelli? Ho portato i miei capelli grigi da quando avevo 40' s. Dovrei togliermi le rughe? Dovrei cominciare a fare ginnastica? Etc. Etc. Etc..
L'unica cosa che posso controllare è come mi sento dentro e come sta bene a me.

"SARA" by Viki
Cerco di ritrovare me stessa.

Every thing in life could have been different, even opposite, not always, but, it all depends on us. Sometimes there are some controllable events which induce us to make changes and every change, in the beginning, is lived as a loss.
Approximately a year and a half ago, my daughter leaves her boyfriend after a 12 year relationship. We lost a presence, a person which we had affectionately become attached to, another person enters in our life, and little by little he becomes part of our life not withstanding our resistance.
A few months, not nearly enough time for us all to get used to the idea, our daughter moves out of the house and moves in with her new boyfriend. It's the moment of the great emptiness: a non present husband, a son who has moved away from house for many years but now more than ever I feel his absence. I am trying to find myself again. There is still not enough time to familiarize myself with this change and yet another news arrives: She is expecting a child. Quickly after: " I'm getting married".
I almost do not make the connection in the frenzy of the daily preparation for the wedding, It does'nt seem real, perhaps it is a dream… and instead the day arrives…. Now she is wife, she will soon become a mother, but isn't she always going to be my little girl? Changes -Decisive, important. The uncontrollable events will follow: a small new great presence will be amongst us: Sara

"la Signora Bionda" "The Blonde"
their pain by filling the void with a new one. Here I am visiting
Rome, and thinking about my grandmother, and her story, which is an
inspirational one for me. She chose her happiness and self
fullfillment over her husband. He wanted her to leave her work and
join him in a “tenuta”, a large farm house with horses, farmers, lots
of land and........
“La Signora Bionda” or “The blonde”, as she was named by the people of the
town that eventually became her home, the outsider from Riccione.
Throughout her life she was a midwife, mother, wife, a survivor of
world war 2 and fascism. She was a bonafide communist.
She dedicated her life to her profession. She was well known for
having delivered most of the children in the town. but she also took
upon herself the task of assisting those women who, out of wedlock,
had to make the difficult decision to give up their children. She
broke every rule to protect women in need of her services. To protect
the identity of these women she would personally take their children
to the orphanage in Rome. She took every precautions to keep their
secret "secret". Once she took me along with her. The infants were twins. I
can still remember the large house filled with children in uniforms.
I can still see them, they looked happy, and well fed. On the way
home, I kept thinking how fortunate I was to have such a loving
grandmother and mother and never wanted to lose them.
My grandmother was a woman of unbelievable generosity. She would take
young girls in need into our home. I woke up one morning to find that
a young girl had moved in during the night; she lived with us until
she was old enough to go out on her own. My grandmother’s
explanation was that she went to the girl's house to deliver a baby
and that the family, of mostly men, all lived and slept in one room.
She felt that she could not leave her in these conditions and brought
her home. As a child I believed her story, now as a grown woman I
look back and have doubts. She wasn’t the only young woman in need
who would mysteriously show up at our house.
During the war, when her sister and sister-in-law died in a bombing, she went back to her home town and brought back her nieces and nephew and raised them as if they were her own children, I always thought they were my aunts and uncle. Our family lived in a home that was dynamic, full of life -- laughter, tears, music, poetry, philosophy. Women would come knocking on the door, looking for the children they had given up, Younger women and men would come, searching for their mothers. My grandmother would help them all. She was a woman of great compassion but also great strength.
One of the things my grandmother enjoyed most was reading and in
particular she loved Russian novels. So she named her children
accordingly, Loris, Verusca, Mara, Unfortunately, under the rule of
Mussolini (whose hometown neighbored the one where my grandmother
lived), this wasn't deemed acceptable. She was called to the courts by
Mussolin’s regime and ordered to change her children' names to ones
that were purely Italian. She protested. pointing out that they were
her children and she could name them whatever she see fit. At the
end, even my grandmother couldn't overrile Mussolini and she had no
choice but to give in. She said, "For you they'll be Otello,
Mariantonietta and Maria but to me they will always be Loris, Verusca
and Mara." Then she stormed out.
As a young child I emigrated to the US but a part of me stayed in
Italy forever, and that part clung to my grandmother, who I felt so
close to I remember that every day, she found the time to take me to the
bar, for our daily routine. I would have a pastry and she a few
coffees. There were always gallant men whom offered to treat us, but
she always refused and at the end, it would be her treating them. She
was a true feminist many decades before I burned by bra in the 60’s.
.
It wasn't until the age of 18 that I went back to visit her one
summer, and during that trip, I visited an orphanage she often
visited. The nuns there told me that for years my grandmother every
Sunday would send boxes of pastries to the orphans. Why pastries?
Because, my grandmother explained, there is always money for
necessities but it is the little luxuries that the children learned to
live without. She wanted to light up their somewhat darkened world.
I wanted to share her story because she is a figure that is an example
for me and other women. These strong, courageous women need to be
remembered and kept in our memory. I am what I am today because of
her. I thank her for teaching me to be strong and independent and,
most importantly, showing me that happiness doesn't come from other
people but from inside yourself.

"Come I Gabbiani" by Rose
Franca,
My mother would say: " When a door closes a gate opens"; this is to say that when a relationship ends, the pain is strong, it makes one believe that it's impossible to get over the loss and move on with your life. The only thing left to do is to respond with tenacity, to face the truth and to think: " all is not lost". If we had more confidence and had the knowledge of having unexpressed hidden resources, we could find ourselves. Dante thus begins his Poema - La Divina Commedia-: " Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita mi ritrovai per una selva oscura, che' la diretta via era smarrita". In so happens that in everyones life,we lose our way. " la diretta via" We are lost but solid in the convincement that we exist, that we are important and that we are part of everything. The objective is only: " la Salvezza”. wrote Dante the poet: "Liberta' vo' cercando ch'e si cara". The end of a relationship can be a liberation, a moment of reflection, to find ourselves again, rivisit our past life, to choose our positive aspects and to reconstruct some new. The Sea gulls, creatures of the skies, fly in the immense space, they do not look for shelter or partners but free to flap their wings, they balance in flight with wide and solemn gestures, simulacri religious, figures that evoke remote simbologie impersonating invisible forces, thus that the fantasy and creativity evolves in the sense of liberation.
The Sea Gulls, during a moment in my life, have been my companions, They have given me a sense of freedom. I would see them from my balcony flying over the city, sometimes they would stop to rest, sit still with vigilance in full attention. Emotional correspondences! they have been my ispirational models represented in my sculptures, molding them with clay, I have produced so many that I was able to exhibit them in an art gallery in Rome. It was a thrilling moment of great satisfaction. I than started to sculpture in particular, feminine bodies, I have represented, them as if they were regenerated exiting from a body in order to construct a new one, as it happens in the reptiles. I also started riproducing the human face. The face tells what it tries to hide. You can discover an invisible world, you can read what cannot be seen and surpass the visible elements. To see beyond the image. It is thrilling! I have found in art and in sculptures, in particular, the reason of life, I have found myself, my repressed aspirations.
I believed I was a good mother, a devoted wife , a model teacher, a faithful and sincere friend, I had constructed a life that seemed perfect, even if sometimes I had the feeling of not being loved.
All collapsed, the day I discovered "il tradimento". He was having an affair with my friend. I should have been more guardinga?, less ingenuous? but then it's not important the tradimento happens when something is wrong in the relationship. I have learned to see who he really is by looking at his manner, that “gentleman” next to me, was a , hypocrite, false with lots of masks. The model in my head, that I had constructed and put on a pedestal, crolled. I believed that he was the man to love and to appreciate, instead he was only a “small enslaved man” and acted on his base instincts!
No-one must be allowed to offend a person. The dignity and the moralità must always be the foundations of our own life and to cleans is a must do action. This is the juice of the vicissitude that can seem normal but it would not be if I was to tell the succeeding events which pushed the limits of the grotesque, the surrealism, and the unbelievable. Now I am a happy woman, I live with my son and daughter whom I love. They love me. I have my family, my friends, my students, my art. I sing in a chorus, have danced flamenco for years. I plan to do many other things in the future. There is no limit to providence!

"Chapter Two" by Heloise
It appears that I am at Chapter Two of my life and in need of a new editor for this phase.
I have had a rewarding and successful career in fashion as a design director of woman's and childrenswear. Besides being responsible for running design teams of brand products, I worked with all major retailers to create private label programs.
My career defined a large portion of who I was. I enjoyed working but also enjoyed the rewards that came with it. I traveled, was able to purchase, within reason, anything I wanted. I was able to spend money on family and friends and enjoyed the happiness it brought to them.
Throughout my career I was never unemployed and usually received multiple offers to join other companies. This came to an abrupt halt a year ago when without warning I was downsized. Not only was I downsized but downsized in an industry that has shrunk by 20 percent or more in the past year.
At first I was quite optimistic I had received a fair severance package and truly believed with my experience I would find something else quickly. With all my contacts I was only able to achieve 4 or 5 interviews and nobody was hiring just downsizing.
I have seen major recruiters leaving the industry, as there were no jobs to fill, they have no income.
Most companies now insist on having applications sent through their web sites. Most never even acknowledge receipt of the resumes. There are no letters, no rejections absolutely no courtesy of any type. You are not allowed an opportunity to see yourself in person. I have learned, by speaking with friends who are employed in other fields, this in not just in my industry but in most industries.
The HR departments have become rude and chaotic. I have never experienced a situation where it is absolutely impossible to have any human contact in your job search.
The reality is that my life as I have known it has ground to a halt.
I know I am too young to retire, but the industry seems to feel I am too old to work.
I am sure that there are many other high powered individuals out there who in their middle years are not ready to be put out to pasture.
Now comes the hard part how do we re-career and write our Chapter Two.
Thank you Franca for giving me a chance to express what so many others must be feeling.

There is no "what should be" there is only what is - Lenny Bruce
The "what should be" never did exist, but people keep trying to live up to it. There is no "what should be" there is only what is. - Lenny Bruce
Good Day All!
I had no warning when my life-partner/business-partner of 30 years left me for a woman 20 years my junior, and as though he hadn’t caused me enough pain, he also took the practice I had started and shared with him.
It was a terrible shock to me and to all of our friends and family. I didn't know what to do. I made a personal transformation almost immediately. I had to do something different, so I became a platinum blonde and shopped compulsively. My wardrobe grew to ridiculous proportions.
As time goes by, I am seeing everything in quite another light. I realize that, as shocking and as painful as it was, it also gave me a serendipitous occasion to re-evaluate my dreams, and the chance to have new beginnings. I am thankful for the strong women who raised me (my mother and my grandmother) and who have shown me what it is to have courage under pressure. With my mother's help, and with memories and stories from my grandmother, along with new stories from supportive friends, I am now able to make the many necessary changes that my new life demands.
Before he left, I had been looking forward to our retirement, our plans and our dreams of spending at least six months of the year in Italy at my places in Rome and Terracina. Now, I‘m free to plan only for myself.
I have learned that the important thing is what is. You never know where life will take you. You just know where you are now.
I recently rediscovered the poem, The Descent of Innana, (The Goddess of love, fertility, and war) but this time with a new understanding. Now signifying BIRTH - DEATH - REBIRTH. Most of us have experienced this in one way or another, in relationship, friendship, business, career , etc. http://www.mindspring.com/~ysticgryphon/descent.htm
When my partner left I thought he had taken with him the things that made me Me, my optimism, creativity - my many ideas, my curiosity about life, but I am pleased to have discovered that this is not so.
I’ve gone from running my own accounting practice, (a business management firm, mainly handling artists), running an online store selling antiques and vintage jewelry, living in a large apartment, on the upper east side, to living on the lower east side with my two daughters in a much smaller apartment, preparing tax returns from my home office, and selling my personal collection of antiques and vintage jewelry to make ends meet.
My business-woman side just won’t stop. I’ve got some ideas for new business opportunities. My favorite one is, "The Cantina." One of my Italian properties is a 14th Century above-ground wine cellar, and I'm working on developing it into a cultural center with live music, art shows, poetry readings...and I even found a renowned card-reader who will divine our futures....
I'm hoping you join in this blog. I’d love to read your stories of change, your troubles, happy beginnings, happy endings........your transformation! .......help me, and others, by sharing your experiences -
Thank you for reading. Please come back
